SUMMARY:Safely Navigating Social Media: Strategies and Tools for Promoting Social Media Safety for Young Adults with IDD
DESCRIPTION:Social media use can present many benefits and risks for young adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). This presentation will use an interactive case study approach to present the benefits and dangers individuals with IDD may experience when using social media. Strategies and resources to mitigate these dangers and promote independence in social media safety will be given. Dangers that will be highlighted include predators\, cyberbullying\, online consent/boundaries\, scams\, and digital footprints. \n\nLearning objectives:\nAfter this presentation\, attendees will be able to\n\nImplement strategies to assist young adults with IDD in the identification and addressing\nof predators\, cyberbullying\, online consent\, and scams.\nImplement strategies to assist young adults with IDD in learning what to share online\,\nincluding that of keeping personal information private and basic netiquette rules.\n\n  \nPresented by: \nDr. Mary Jo Krile is an associate professor of Special Education at Eastern Kentucky University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in special education and moderate to severe disabilities. Dr. Krile has over 10 years of experience in teaching students with disabilities in the public K-12 and postsecondary settings\, including teaching digital literacy to young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
