Response to the Passing of Hunter Adkins

Dear fellow advocates, guardians, allies, and members of the disability community,

I write to you today with a heavy heart following the tragic and preventable death of Hunter Adkins, a 24-year-old young man with muscular dystrophy who passed away following a catastrophic incident while attempting to board a commercial flight.

In March 2024, Hunter was traveling with his family at Huntington Tri-State Airport. During the boarding process, airline staff transferred Hunter out of his personal motorized wheelchair into an unstrapped airport chair. Amid rushed boarding conditions, the chair tipped forward, causing Hunter to fall face-first and sustain fatal blunt force injuries. He passed away fifteen hours later.

Why Does This Matter?

Hunter’s death is a horrific manifestation of systematic failures in accessible transit that disabled travelers navigate every single day:

• Accessible travel is a basic civil right, not an afterthought: Disabled passengers routinely face unsafe transfer procedures, destroyed mobility equipment, and inadequately trained personnel when attempting to travel.
• Efficiency is prioritized over human safety: Commercial travel pressures often force staff to rush transfer procedures, bypassing basic safety protocols like harness checks and proper staffing ratios.
• Lack of strict enforcement and accountability: Regulatory oversight and inadequate training standards continue to put wheelchair users at severe physical risk during routine travel.

What Can We Do Together?

A Call to Action for Air Travel Accessibility and Safety Standards

We must demand immediate, enforceable changes to protect wheelchair users and disabled travelers:

• Demand strict enforcement of the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA): Urge lawmakers to pass stronger passenger protections that hold airlines legally and financially accountable for injuries and equipment damage.
• Mandate comprehensive safety training for flight crews and ground staff: Call on airlines to implement mandatory, hands-on training for all staff handling passenger transfers and personal mobility equipment.
• Advocate for safe, in-cabin wheelchair tie-downs: Push federal aviation regulators to accelerate the implementation of personal wheelchair securement systems on commercial aircraft so passengers do not have to transfer out of their custom devices.

Hunter Adkins deserved to travel with safety, dignity, and care. His preventable death must serve as an urgent wake-up call that accessibility in public transportation is a matter of life and safety.
